Stop the Overflow
We shut the cistern tap, drop the bowl to a safe level and stop wastewater spreading over your floors, so the room is safe before any diagnosis work starts.
An overflowing toilet needs someone on the phone fast. Margate Plumber stops the water, clears the cause and makes the bathroom safe across Margate and the bayside suburbs nearby. Licensed plumbing and gasfitting under QBCC No: 15024607, and a fixed quote before any work starts.
If we're late, $100 comes off your bill

Work top to bottom, and do not flush again until someone has looked at it:
Turn the isolation tap on the wall beside the toilet clockwise until it seats. If the bowl keeps filling, the water is coming from further down the line.
A bucket and some towels drop the level below the rim so one more surge does not spill over.
Overflow water is wastewater, so keep children and pets away and keep the door shut.
If the shower or the floor drain is gurgling too, the problem is in the shared line, not the toilet itself.
Ring (07) 3067 4274 once the water is contained. We will triage it over the phone while you mop.

Most overflow calls here are a blockage somewhere between the S-bend and the street main. The fix ranges from a plunger to a full drain clear, and the first job is always the same: stop the water, then find where it is stuck.

Close to two-thirds of the sewer line Unitywater runs under these streets is old clay pipe, and asbestos cement carries much of what remains, so those worn joints drink in groundwater when a storm rolls up the bay. Wastewater then climbs out of the lowest gully trap on the property, and on the medium-hazard pockets the flood overlay marks, such as Wales Street and Acacia Street, the toilet is often the first place it shows.
The last census recorded 23.7 per cent of dwellings as flats or apartments, and those blocks feed several bathrooms from a single stack. A blockage one floor down can push wastewater up into your pan, so an overflow above a neighbour's ceiling is rarely only your problem.
The recent apartment wave put brand-new bathrooms into salt air, and the braided flexi hoses and plastic taps that went in with them can weep or seize within a few years. A stuck inlet valve filling a cistern non-stop is a common early call in the newer blocks.

The causes stack up from the easiest to the biggest, and we work them in that order:
The simplest cause, and often cleared at the pan with the right tools.
Partial flush, rising bowl, and eventually a spill. See toilet repairs for the repair side.
Tree roots or silt in an old earthenware drain trap the flush, and the pan refills to the rim every time.
Storm rain pushes the street's wastewater up through your lowest outlet. This one is about the main, not your pipes.
Asbestos cement thins as it ages, and a long run can fail outright after a soaking. See blocked sewer for the full picture.

You can safely check a few things yourself; the rest of the diagnosis is ours.
Anything beyond that, including drain openings and anything involving the pan itself, is our end of the job.

Water crossing the floor, sewage at the gully trap, or an overflow in a unit with neighbours below cannot wait. A bowl that fills slowly after one flush and then settles is usually a booked visit the same week. If in doubt, ring and describe it; we will tell you honestly which one it is.

Everything this call covers, from the first bucket to the last test flush:

We shut the cistern tap, drop the bowl to a safe level and stop wastewater spreading over your floors, so the room is safe before any diagnosis work starts.

Toilet paper, tree roots or a shared main can all hold the flush back, so we clear the line from the pan or an inspection point and restore normal flow.

When storm rain pushes sewage up through gully traps, we make the toilet safe and check whether the Unitywater main in the street is surcharging, then advise who must act.

Once the overflow is under control, the cistern, inlet valve or pan collar may need attention, so we repair what let it happen and leave the toilet flushing properly again.
$0 call-out fees, available 24/7, and same-day where we can.

A blockage downstream holds the flush back, and the bowl fills instead of draining, which usually means paper, roots or a collapsed joint in an old earthenware branch line somewhere.
A cracked pan, a worn pan collar or a partially blocked S-bend lets the bowl empty slowly, and every flush after runs the risk of spilling right over the rim.
A dried-out floor trap or a surcharged main lets sewer gas past the water seal, so we check the seal level and the line before the smell becomes an overflow.
Apartments share one stack, so a blockage in a lower unit on the stack can push wastewater into yours, and isolation plus a shared diagnosis stops it reaching every bathroom.

Overflow water reaches grout, skirting and floor coverings fast, and the sooner it is stopped and the cause found, the smaller the cleanup bill on the other side.
Water travels down through slab edges and service penetrations, so a contained overflow tonight can save a very awkward conversation with the unit below tomorrow.
A paper blockage cleared at the pan and a root-cut branch line are different jobs with different prices, which is exactly why we diagnose first and quote a fixed figure before touching anything.

We shut the cistern off, drop the bowl level, clear the blockage or confirm a surcharge, then run flush after flush until the water sits where it should.

Every overflow call gets the containment first and the diagnosis second, because those two things in that order are what keep a bad night from becoming a bad week.
Every Margate job comes with $0 call-out fees, and there's no extra cost for nights, weekends or public holidays.

We stand behind the work with our Fix-It-or-It's-Free guarantee (T&Cs apply), and if we're late, $100 comes off your bill.

Turn off the cistern's inlet tap, scoop the bowl level down with a bucket, keep everyone clear of the water, then call (07) 3067 4274 and we will talk you through it.
The old clay and asbestos cement in the street mains let storm water in through worn joints, and the sewer can push back up into your pan or the yard drain.
Unitywater maintains the main in the street, while the pipes from your boundary connection into the house are yours, so the clearing work on your Margate side is ours.
Not with water crossing the floor, because in a shared block one overflowing pan can soak the unit below, so treat it as an emergency and call us straight away.
It often is, because air trapped by a partial blockage bubbles up through the pan as water drains past, and a CCTV drain inspection shows whether the line needs clearing now.
Call (07) 3067 4274 and Margate Plumber will triage the overflow, talk you through the make-safe steps and aim for the same day where we can, with the price fixed before work starts.
